PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL
December 5, 2001

Present: Tom Anderson, Thad Bell, Rosalie Crouch, Bruce Elliott, Bo Faulkner, Joe Good, Ray Greenberg, Anne Kilpatrick, Leigh Manzi (for Jim Fisher), Jerry Reves, Ken Roozen, Sabra Slaughter (Council Secretary), Stuart Smith, Paul Taylor, and Walker Coleman

ITEM 1. UMA CEO Candidate Interview

Council interviewed one of the candidates for the UMA CEO position.

ACTION: Counsel asked that the final recommended candidate be presented to the MUSC and MUHA Boards prior to an employment contract being signed.

ITEM 2. Update on Research Compliance

Dr. Conradi, the MUSC Academic Compliance Officer, updated the Council on the MUSC compliance program. The Research Code of Conduct was discussed and will be considered for approval at a future meeting.

ACTION: A revised Code of Conduct will be presented to the Council for consideration at a future meeting.

ITEM 3. Hollings Groundbreaking Ceremony

Dr. Slaughter reviewed plans and participants for the Hollings Cancer Center Expansion Groundbreaking Ceremony at 3:00pm on December 13, 2001 as well as associated events.

ACTION: Council received this as information.

ITEM 4. Updates

Dr. Crouch noted that a report on the recent Diversity Retreat will be forthcoming.

Ms. Manzi reported that fundraising was still well ahead of this time last year; the United Way Campaign had reached 89% of goal; there will be several major prospect calls over the next week; and several major donations are imminent.

Dr. Kilpatrick announced that the most recent Faculty Senate meeting experienced virtually 100% attendance and dealt with Faculty Handbook updating plans and process as well as the several major Senate committees.

Mr. Faulkner reviewed logistical planning underway for the MUSC Board retreat after the February 2002 Board meeting.

Mr. Coleman noted that the MUSC Fund Management Committee, which he staffed, has completed a draft final report, which will be distributed for comment to the Committee as well as directly involved MUSC leadership.

Dr. Bell had met with the Student Council and is working to follow up on some of the suggestions made.

Dr. Elliott reported that November had been a very successful financial month for UMA; the CEO search is drawing to a close; and steady progress is being made in directly communicating proposed financial restructuring plans to all concerned parties.

Dr. Roozen observed that research funding is running several million dollars ahead of last year as well as informed of several beneficial Research Foundation agreements recently made and/or imminent.

Mr. Smith reported on completion of efforts to directly inform Trustees of the MUHA bond refinancing strategy as originally discussed at the November 14, 2001 Council Meeting.

Dr. Reves and colleagues are continuing to roll out plans for curtailing College expenditures beyond a unit's means.

Dr. Slaughter reminded of the Candle Lighting Ceremony to be held at 4:00pm in the Horseshoe.
