PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL MINUTES Present: Rick Albenesius, Tom Anderson, Wallace Bonaparte, Frank Clark, Jack Feussner, Jim Fisher, Joe Good, Ray Greenberg, Sarah King, Lisa Montgomery, John Raymond, Jerry Reves, Sabra Slaughter, and Walker Coleman Guests: Ralph Greene, Patrick Wamsley, Bruce Quinlan, Mike Keels, Maurice Snook, Susan Barnhart, John Cormier, Dave Soutter, John Lemasters, Yusuf Hannun, Jim Ramich ITEM 1 Financial Updates As of the 9-month period ending 03/31/06, MUSC’s bottom line was $ 23 Million, MUHA $ 21 Million, UMA $ 9.3 Million, and CFC $ 1.4 Million. ACTION: Council received this as information. ITEM 2 Heart and Vascular Advisory Board Update Chair, Jim Ramich, overviewed the Board’s four year history, structure, charges, funds raised, and strategic plan—expressing gratification at the progress and with the support provided by Mr. Soutter and colleagues. ACTION: Council commended Mr. Ramich and the Board for such productive direction and generous support. ITEM 3 Board of Trustees Preparation Agendas for the May 18, 2006 MUSC and MUHA Board meetings were discussed. ACTION: Council approved agendas pending completion of several followup assignments. ITEM 4 Center for Cell Death, Injury, and Regeneration Dr. Lemasters presented evolution, organization, and rationale for official University Center designation. ACTION: Council bestowed University Center designation and referred to the MUSC Board for approval to be followed by Commission on Higher Education formal recognition. EXTRA ITEM 1 Center for Lipidomics and Pathobiology Dr. Hannun presented evolution, organization, and rationale for official University Center designation. ACTION: Council bestowed University Center designation and referred to the MUSC Board for approval to be followed by Commission on Higher Education formal recognition. EXTRA ITEM 2 Change to HIPPA Committee Reporting Channels Dr. Raymond noted that this must now report to the Provost in order to be in compliance with HIPPA. ACTION: Council approved this change to the HIPPA reporting channels. ITEM 5 General Updates Dr. Clarke had negotiated a telephone system switch back from State to MUSC at projected annual savings of $ 450,000. Mr. Bonaparte conveyed an interest of the Legislative Black Caucus in possible use of Lottery funds for minority faculty recruitment, and will provide them with information on MUSC’s excellent record for such recruitment as supplied by Dean Reves.
