The South Carolina Rural Interdisciplinary Program of Training (SCRIPT) is a community-based education project which aims to increase the likelihood that health professions students will select a rural, underserved community for clinical practice following graduation. The project is a collaborative effort between the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, and Lowcountry Area Health Education Center, Varnville. Faculty from the Medical University of South Carolina facilitate the interdisciplinary course, "Rural Interdisciplinary Practicum," while the Lowcountry Area Health Education Center coordinates clinical placement, field trips, and other community-based activities; classroom facilities, and housing. In addition, the staff from the Lowcountry Area Health Education Center are a vital link between participating students and community residents and health professionals. The Lowcountry Area Health Education Center is the recipient of grants from the Bureau of Health Professions and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which provide financial support for the project. The project began in 1993.
